Edinburgh Shore Excursion details
The Kelpies, The Falkirk Wheel, and Stirling Castle
On this Edinburgh shore excursion, we leave port and travel west. Along the way, we’ll pass Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. Crowned after her father’s death at only six days old.
We will then visit The Kelpies. One of the newest and most fascinating attractions in central Scotland. They stand an impressive 30 metres tall, set in a newly developed park on the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal.
The Kelpies are the world’s largest equine sculptures. A testament to the horsepower that drove the industrial development of Scotland. There are opportunities all over the park to take pictures from every angle.
Leaving the Kelpies behind, we make our way to the Falkirk Wheel, the worlds first and only rotating boat lift. This exceptional feat of engineering was designed to connect the Forth & Clyde Canal with the Union Canal and was opened in 2002 as part of the Millennium Link Project. Visitors to the wheel can experience an unforgettable 50 min boat tour on this marvel of engineering.
Leaving the Falkirk Wheel behind we then make our way to the imposing 15th-century Stirling castle, once the favoured residence of the Stewart kings & queens. A place where grand celebrations took place, from royal christenings to extravagant coronations.
There is a great deal to see and explore here in the castle and its grounds. Including the impressive Great Hall, The Royal Chapel, and the elegant Royal Palace.
Arriving at the castle we shall spend around 2 hours here allowing you plenty time to explore one of Scotland’s grandest castles both historically and architecturally.
please note- As an outside tour company we are not allowed to conduct tours within the castle grounds. However before entering the castle you friendly guide shall take some time with you to explain Stirling’s ancient history including the many bloody battles against invading armies during the wars of Independence.
After your tour of the castle and if time permits. We shall make quick photo stops at the historic Stirling Bridge, site of William Wallace’s famous victory against King Edward 1st of England in 1297, and the impressive National Wallace Monument, which was completed in 1869 to commemorate Scotland’s 13th and 14th century hero. Bringing the perfect end to your memorable Edinburgh shore excursion.
